"The author always keeps you guessing what really happened and this book was no different in that. However beginning in court was a unique approach and the story was very compelling."

Maigret in Court Inspector Maigret Book 55 Audible Audio Edition Georges Simenon Gareth Armstrong Audible Studios Books Reviews

  • Once again I'm reminded of the subtle quality of Simenon's writing.

The story begins not with a body, but with the accused already in the dock. Maigret himself has put Gaston Meurant there for the murder of his aunt and the small child she was babysitting.

The evidence was damning, and yet Maigret was not satisfied with the way the facts fit the personalities involved. He continued to work on the case after it was solved. And in chapter one we watch him upsetting all the lawyers in court by recasting the investigation at the trial.

Then we follow Maigret's restless search for the truth as he plays cat and mouse with all the same characters all over again.

Maigret is ever ambivalent about guilt and judgment, and this unconventional attitude adds depth to a rather simple story. When the chief inspector retires in two years, he'll be released from his role in court, a disturbing role because, as he sees it, the evidence is always a mere digest of any particular human drama. So this simple story deals not only with the past and present, but also with an untried future.
  • The author always keeps you guessing what really happened and this book was no different in that. However beginning in court was a unique approach and the story was very compelling.
  • Very unique style of writing. In some ways, puts Sherlock Holmes to shame. Very interesting twists to the plot that are quite unexpected and very developed characters, particularly the lead, Maigret.
  • Interesante historia
  • Good arrival
  • George Simenon published this book in 1960. It is delightful in at least three ways. (1) Simenon wrote Maigret books about crimes and psychological books. This novel includes both. (2) The story captures our interest from page 1 and hold it throughout our reading. (3) We learn about French criminal courts and how the police work in France.
George Simenon (1903-1989) published almost 400 novels, including 75 books with Inspector Maigret and a couple dozen psychological dramas such as “Aunt Jeanne,” books that I enjoyed and recommend. They are comparatively short. This one is under 130 pages and is easy to read. The plots in all of Simenon’s books are excellent.
In this book, a man is arrested for the murder of his aunt by cutting her throat and stealing her money, and the murder of a child in her care by smothering the child. The man’s wife curiously went to the movies every night and her husband had to make supper. Maigret is unsure that the man is guilty and is determined to find the truth. We read about the trial and Maigret’s activities. They are unlike what happens in the USA.
