In 1914, the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton announced an ambitious plan to lead the first trek across Antarctica via the South Pole. The expedition would prove fraught with adventure—and peril. - For some reason Shackleton's voyage has always fascinated me, and I have a number of books on that amazing expedition, including several written by other members as well as the edition of South. I purchased this book primarily for the photographs as any I had seen previously were quite remarkable. When you recognize that the photographer Whorley used all glass plate negatives and was able to save a major selection of them as the Edurance was crushed by the ice, then through the long life-boat trek over land and sea to Elephant Island and beyond to the final sail to South Georgia Island, the story is simply incredible. Even more incredible is the fact that Shackleton, through his leadership skills and determination, saved his entire crew of 28. He understood the strengths and failings of his men thoroughly and, had not World War I been the top concern of the day when he returned to England, would have been hailed as quite the hero. This is an excellent volume and I would urge readers to obtain other stories of this expedition, including the several written by the men who sailed with Shackleton.
- Having read many accounts of the Shackleton expedition, the story as told be the man himself opens an introspective view of his strategy, humanity, and perspective. At times the account of longitude and latitude seems repetitive but is essential to the expedition leader.
The chapters on the Aurora expedition describes an intense struggle that parallels the difficulty of the crew of the Endurance. The tragedy met with the three who died adds to the amazing accomplishment of the Shackleton team. - Amazing book, amazing story. A must read for just about anybody.
